The Travel Channel’s Top 10 Mexican Beach Resorts was on earlier this week. I flipped over and caught a little of it. This made me think about all of my trips to Mexico and why I would never stay at one of these resorts. I love to experience different things, small hole in the wall restaurants, exploring el centros and getting out of the town to see what else is around. Although these resorts look lovely with every imaginable amenity I would never pay what they want for a room. Give me my $27 a night room on Isla Mujeres and I am happy!
I am going to be posting several blogs over the next few days as sort of pictorials of some of my earlier trips to Mexico to various cities. I am pretty much hooked on just traveling to Isla now but I never know when I may want to find a new Mexican travel spot to explore.
My first trip to Mexico was in 1985. A friend and I traveled to Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. I have no idea where the photo album is that has those photos in it. I do remember a couple of things that I thought were interesting about that trip and my first exposure to Mexico. The hotel room in Mazatlan had a poorly translated sign that said you couldn’t introduce the opposite sex to your room. The $10 room in PV right on the beach didn’t allow our two gay friends who lived in PV to come up to our room since they were men and God forbid we might have sex with them. My friend Cynthia and I took the boat trip to Yelapa. It was wonderfully remote and a quaint village at best. We had the two friends for tour guides and experienced much more than the average tourist would have seen. It was a great trip but I did not go back to Mexico until 1993 when I first visited Isla Mujeres and Playa del Carmen.
The Travel Channel’s Top Ten Mexican Beach Resorts:
# 9 This resort has over 1,000 rooms and has a 5 star restaurant. I guess staying at one of these types of Cancun resorts explains why some people in line at the Cancun airport have 5 suitcases
# 3 The manager bragged about how the resort was basically self contained and couples never had to leave the property. Then why go to Mexico? If you never leave the resort you miss out on the whole experience of traveling to Mexico and experiencing a different culture. Sorry, but I don’t get it.
One of these resorts has six pools even though it is right on a beautiful beach.
