Just when I think this week can’t get any worse

My 80 year old mother was admitted to the hospital today. She has felt woozy and light headed since Saturday. She hasn’t eaten hardly anything in days. The first thing the doctor diagnosed was that she had internal bleeding.  After a colonoscopy and a GI the results are that there is a large cancerous tumor in her colon. The doctor said that it could be related to the polyps he saw last March. Back in March because of her age, medication and high BP the doc thought the risks were too high to do surgery. The cancer has metastasized. She also had a chest x-ray and saw a spot on one of her lungs. The doctor thinks that the cancer has spread. Surgery will be scheduled but the outcome is iffy due to the high risk factors.

This is the first cancer in our family ever that I am aware of. My mother is at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital which is an excellent hospital to be in if you have to be in a hospital in Portland.

  4. Oh Jackie – I’m so sorry to hear this. And yes, your mom will need the surgery despite the risks. I know this is a trying time for you, and that knowing our thoughts are with you brings you a little comfort.

  5. Thanks everyone for the kind words. The cancer is stage 4 in my mother’s lungs, lymph nodes, liver and colon. Drs. told her the treatment options yesterday. Tara and i are going to the hospital in a couple of hours.

  6. Hi Jackie … this may not be a great time to connect with your mother so ill; I am sorry there is so much stress going on in your world at the moment. I am in Portland too, and am doing a LOT of research in retirement destinations in Mexico, making plans, etc. I would love to touch base with you (possibly over a margarita or two?!) sometime in the near future when convenient. Let me know… nopogayle@comcast.net.
    Take care.
